Stone Railing (Akshardham Temle)

Stone Railing

To prevent people, especially children and the aged, from falling down the second base, Narayan Peethika, Swamishri instructed that an ornate stone railing be set up all around the edges.

Parikrama (Colonnade) Design

Another issue that cropped up was the design of the parikrama. In the first design the entire parikrama was topped with a continuous stone roof without shikhars. A sample was set up at the workshop in Pindvada. After a few changes everyone consented to the design. But when photographs of the sample were shown to B.V Chaudhary for its structural design, he advised, “The structure is a top-heavy structure and is not suitable at all. Another design will have to be thought of.”

Even after several discussions, no solution was available. Once, after a discussion in Delhi, everyone prayed and left. Then surprisingly the next day, the same solution flashed in the minds of ishwarcharan Swami and Shrijiswarup Swami, Harshadbhai Chavda, engineer ashwinbhai and Shri chaudhary in New Delhi. The Solution was to have a series of samvarans at regular intervals. A design was made end everyone felt it was appropriate and beautiful. B.V. Chaudhary remarked, “This is the result of divine inspiration.”

Today, the appearance and beauty of 155 samvarans on the parikrama bear witness to that.

Yogihriday Kamal

The Design of the eight-petalled lotus of inspiration below ground level would require the visitors to descend and ascend steps. With regards to the visitors having become fatigued by walking three to four hours around the complex, Swamishri asked whether people could see it from the top. And so the top pathway was designed for the visitors’ comfort. Those wishing to see the quotes in details would be allowed to descend.

Leyer-Wise Carvings (Akshardham Delhi)

Pramukh Swami Maharaj instructed that all the carvings on the mandovar, pillars and ceilings should be deep and of fine quality, so that they would stand the test of time, Further, he suggested that the carvings of the mandir exterior be done layer by layer and be fixed as each layer, from bottom to top, was completed.

Swamishri’s guidance was most apt because the carving and sculpting project was distributed to the 24 workshops around Pindvada. If the sculpting of the top layer finished earlier than the bottom layers, time would be lost in waiting for the bottom layer to be carved. So, the task was organized to be done layer by layer, and thereafter, the stones were transported immediately to new delhi and fixed in place.

Size of Pillars

Swamishri had insisted that the pillars inside the mandir be thick and broad. Some, however, felt that they would not look aesthetic. But the structural engineers agreed to Swamishri’s suggestion and felt that thick, strong pillars were required to make the mandir stand, especially in the earthquake prone zone.

Flag on Main Dome

With Akshardham being a Mandir, Swamishri Stated that a flag should flutter on top. Also, Yogiji Maharaj had wished to have a flag.

Steps to Akshardham Mandir

Swamishri had suggested that the edges of each step to the mandir should protrude a little rather than being aligned with the step. Then, he added that the protruding edge should be round with a thickness of two inches so that it would not snap of due to wear and tear. And finally, on Swamishri’s advice, grooves were made on the edges of the smooth stone steps so that people would not slip and fall.

Foundation of Akshardham Delhi

Pramukh Swami Maharaj (Swamishri) advised the Akshardham team to employ experts in foundation technology so that the foundation of akshardham would stand strong for thousands of years. B.V cjaidjaru. A renowned structural engineer and consultant, reflects with conviction, “There has been an experience of divine inspirations at every stage of the Akshardham project,’ Shri Chaudhary was anxious about making the foundation of AKshardham because of the gravelly soil,
the weight of the grand mandir and of Delhi being an earthwuake-prone zone. He adds, “it was an extraordinary challenge to desing a foundation that would last for thousands of years as desired by Pramukh Swami Maharaj. To my mind there was no satisfactory answer in all the modern possibilities.” At that time, a devotee named Maheshbhai Desai, also a foundation technologist, offered to help. After discussing with B.V Chaudhary, recollects the challenge, “without God’s inspiration and pramukh Swami Maharaj’s blessings, this task was impossible. Whenever I was perplexed and there seemed no way out, a solution was found after remembering pramukh Swami Maharaj and praying to God. I have gone through many such experiences.
